If your preschooler or elementary school age child is particularly shy it can be even more daunting! The early education years can prove to have many transitions in them – from the first day of preschool, to walking through the elementary school doors for the first time. It may also be your child’s first time at summer camp this year. So how do you help your child adjust to these new circumstances that bring with them new environments, new people and new expectations? With a few intentional steps you can make the transition a smooth one for you and your child!

Find a Friend

While it may not be as easy as it sounds, sometimes just finding one other person who will be at the new environment with you will make it easier. If you have a young child at home who is about to start preschool, join a local playgroup. If your child is elementary school aged then ask around at your church, workplace, or neighborhood to find other parents with children attending that school. Invite the family over for dinner or schedule a time you can get your kids together and hang out. Keep it really low key – grill in your own backyard, go to a casual restaurant, or even see a movie! When your child sees you stepping out to make new connections, it may make their own experience easier.

Be Prepared

Learn as much as you can about the new school or summer camp that your child will be attending. Who will be their teacher? How many other students will be in the classroom? Where will they go on field trips? The more your child knows (and let’s face it, you too mom!), the less scary the endeavor will feel. Be sure to find specific things your child may enjoy or may have anxiety about. Say something like, “Wow! Your class will visit the zoo! You love going to the zoo!” or even, “There will be 10 kids in the classroom with you. How do you feel about that?”

Talk to your child’s teacher

If you are worried your child may have difficulty adjusting to their new surroundings, it’s always a good idea to talk to his teachers and let them know of any concerns you may have. The more you can work with your child’s teachers the more you can help set them up for success.
