Tomball, TX Preschool: How to Respond to Your Child's Tough Questions

Posted on 06-15-2016 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Tomball

With young children at home you are familiar with how difficult it can be to have clear communication! What about when questions like this are asked: “Why do people die?” “Where do babies come from?” “Are we rich?” “Are we poor?” If you have a preschooler or kindergartener at home, there is a high likelihood that you will be asked questions you may not be 100% prepared to answer. So how do you handle it when your child asks something that makes you scramble for an answer?

According to some experts, the best approach is not to give a muddled or untrue answer. So leave the stork story alone when your child asks about his origins and don’t attempt to make death something it isn’t for the sake of “softening the blow.” Instead, when your child asks you a difficult question respond with, “What do you think about it?” This isn’t a tactic to avoid the question but helps you pinpoint why your child is asking it. If your child is asking about death, for example, they may be worried about what will happen to them if you or a loved one dies. At a young age, children are very self-focused so often the questions they ask come from a place of wondering how it will affect them.

Once your child has given you a little more insight into the reason behind the question you can answer it appropriately. For example, “If mommy dies you don’t have to worry about being taken care of. Daddy will be there to help and love you and so will grandma and grandpa.” Keep your answer concise and don’t dwell on the topic. Most children will be satisfied once their fears are addressed. If your child continues to ask questions, continue to answer! You know your child and his maturity level so feel free to go into a more thorough explanation if you believe he can understand it.
